The Making of an Energy Therapist

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

My childhood was pretty average. I was a “Colored Girl” raised in a middle-class, 2 parent home. My father brought home the bacon and my mother fried it up in a pan. He didn’t want his wife to work, considering it his responsibility to support his family of 5. I was the youngest of 3 children.

When, at the age of 42, my father, my heart, my very favorite person in the world, died of a massive heart attack, my world was tossed upside down. My teenaged perspective became “You work hard and then you die.” My mother didn’t have a clue how to handle paying bills. Her job had always been to spend, spend, spend. I vowed that would never happen to me. I would never put my well-being in the hands of another. So, I took the additional perspective of, “I am Woman, Hear Me Roar.” That Black tax had me working my natural butt off. I won awards. I was recognized. I was seen. And, I was killing myself; slowly.

Twenty-one years ago the embodiment of those combined perspectives lead me to 4th stage uterine cancer. My intuitive voice told me I wasn’t going to die. I was to utilize this path to teach others to heal. Our Creator is really dramatic with me that way. I teach from what I know experientially.

The beauty of this story is that it opened the door to me becoming the powerful Energy Therapist that I am today and have been for nearly 20 years. I knew nothing of energy therapy. I was a regular recipient of Acupuncture treatments and 2-hour massages when I began to feel under the weather. Those therapies did not ward off this illness nor did they assist in the healing of it. My illness was 100% stress-related. With daily early morning yoga, healthy organic meals prepared by my hired cook, a weekly housekeeper, I thought I had all systems in place. I was living under so much stress even I couldn’t recognize it.

After undergoing surgery and a period of daily radiation my inner voice whispered, “Reiki!”

I was lead to the most amazing Reiki instructor who has since passed on. However, Doug honored the sacredness of the teachings of Mikao Usui, the founder of modern Reiki. He met with every applicant to determine their spiritual availability to the teachings. Every applicant, however, was not accepted. He was looking to know the potential depth of the energy work from the applicant at the onslaught. He taught over an extended period of months ascertaining that his students were, indeed, attuned to the powerful energy of Reiki. This witnessing from the instructor is extremely important. I believe the lack of attunement to the Universal Life Force to be a part of what’s missing from many “Reiki” Practitioners.

Yep, I facilitate healing in others on all levels, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. And that gives me great joy!
