Because the reflex points in the feet and hands help set the tension level for the rest of the body they are an easy way to interrupt the stress signal and reset homeostasis, the body's equilibrium. In other words, simply pressing on the appropriate reflex point sets up an environment for healing to take place.
How does Reflexology work?
I generally work through the feet during a reflexology session. Although pinhead reflex points are positioned on the hands and many other points in the body the feet provide the largest and most receptive surface for the session.
Pressure applied to the feet generates a signal through the peripheral nervous system. From there it enters the central nervous system where it is processed in various parts of the brain. The brain then sends a corresponding signal back to the internal organs and/or musculoskeletal system to allocate the necessary adjustments in fuel and oxygen. This message is passed forward through the nervous system to adjust the body's tone or overall tension level. The tone will reset itself to a lower operating tempo. A lower operating tempo means a reduction of stress and less wear and tear on the body's systems.
